I finally finished the blanket for my cousin’s baby girl – only three months after she was born. To be honest, I think I lost my cro-jo for a while, but I’m so glad I found it again!

I first started making a blanket before she was born when we didn’t know if she was going to be a boy or girl, and the yarn I picked seemed to be fairly ‘gender neutral’, but after starting I decided I didn’t really like it for a baby blanket and wasn’t happy with my initial pattern choice. So, browsing Pinterest (as you do) I stumbled across a pattern for a corner to corner granny square blanket and instantly knew that this was the pattern I wanted to use.

When it came to picking the yarn however, it was a bit more difficult. By now, Rosie was born so I wanted to make sure the colours I picked were girly, without being over the top. It just so happened that a new yarn shop had opened in town, so I took a wee trip there and found they stocked Bernat Softee Baby in white, pink and grey. They are lovely colours and I knew they were perfect.

The corner to corner granny is relatively simple, to get started I watched this YouTube video, but once I got going I didn’t need to follow it at all until it was time to decrease. Again, once I’d seen how to do it, it was simple to keep going without having to refer back to a pattern. It was a really relaxing project to work on without having to constantly worry about counting stitches. 

I decided to do five rows of each colour at a time and then ‘guestimated’ when I should start to decrease. To be honest I should have done more planning – it was by sheer luck that I had (just) enough yarn to finish.

I used one ball of each yarn and a 4mm hook – my trusty Clover Amour. The final blanket is 30 inches square, and I finished off by doing a single round of double crochets (UK). It was the first time I’d used this yarn, and I’d definitely use it again. It’s lovely and soft and easier to work with than some ‘baby’ yarns that I’ve used in the past. I think the grey, white and pink give it a modern/more contemporary look than if I’d decided just to use pink on its own.

Although my tension was a bit off at points meaning it’s not a perfect square, I’m really pleased with the final result. What’s important is that it’s complete and is finally with little Rosie. Now, onto another project!
